Problem With Nonstick Bakeware
Nonstick bakeware is convenient. Food does not stick with the minimum quantity of oil, and it is easy to clean. However, despite some conveniences, non-stick bakeware is not suitable for health.

When cooking over 500°F (260°C), PTFE nonstick coating begins to deteriorate and release toxic fumes and chemicals into the atmosphere or the food. This also happens if an empty pan is left on a burner.
When creating PTFE, some manufacturers don’t use PFOS or PFOA, and these chemicals are replaced with substances like GenX. However, replacement chemicals are also considered as poisonous as PFOS or PFOA. Just because bakeware and nonstick cookware state that they’re PFOS or PFOA free, it does not mean it’s free from toxic compounds. Buyer beware.
PFOA Affects People’s Health
There are unknown health effects from exposure to low levels of PFOA. PFOA can remain in the body for extended amounts of time. In lab animals given large amounts, PFOA can influence reproduction, growth, and development, and harm the liver. More research is required to estimate the health effects of exposure to PFOA.
Levels of PFOA from the U.S. Population
As per the report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals (Fourth Report), CDC scientists quantified PFOA from the serum (a visible portion of the blood) of 2094 participants aged 12 years and older who participate in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during 2003-2004. Serum PFOA levels generally reflect the exposure that has occurred over many years. Scientists can estimate the amount of PFOA entered in people’s bodies by measuring PFOA in serum.
* CDC scientists found PFOA in the serum of almost all the people tested, suggesting that PFOA exposure is prevalent in the U.S. population. Finding amounts of PFOA doesn’t suggest that there can be any adverse health impact due to the levels of PFOA.
Biomonitoring studies on levels of PFOA provide doctors and public health officials with reference values so they can determine whether individuals are exposed to higher levels of PFOA found in the general population. Biomonitoring data may help scientists plan and conduct research on exposure and health effects.
Alternatives to Nonstick Bakeware & Non-Toxic Bakeware

Stainless Steel Non-Toxic Bakeware

Glass Non-Toxic Bakeware
When it comes to using an inert material for baking, glass is a good option. One thing you need to consider when baking with glass is cracking. Glass can break if it experiences rapid changes in temperature (thermal shock). It may also break if it’s dropped and encounters harsh effects.
Two types of glass are used to produce bakeware. One is tempered soda-lime glass, while the other is borosilicate glass. Borosilicate glass is more expensive to make, and it’s high tolerance to heat and intense resistance to critical temperature changes. Hence, it has a higher thermal shock resistance than soda lime. It can handle abrupt temperature changes from the freezer to the oven without breaking. But when it breaks, it shatters into little jagged shards that can lead to injury.
On the other hand, tempered soda-lime glass is more powerful than the ordinary glass, but it might break if it experiences sudden temperature changes. But when it breaks, it breaks into small circular bits that are significantly safer than small sharp bits.
Additionally, it’s more resistant to impact breakage. Soda-lime glass is affordable to produce, and it’s the most frequent form of glass employed in US bakeware.
